Getting to know Manavgat
Manavgat is a district east of Antalya city, extending from the Mediterranean coast into the Taurus hinterland. The modern river town, ancient Side and the district’s mountain settlements are different parts of that wider geography. Side belongs within Manavgat district; it is not a twentieth administrative district of Antalya.
Water provides a useful thread through the district. The Manavgat River gives the modern town and nearby waterfall their identity, while the Köprüçay and its canyon belong to another inland water landscape. Coastal Side introduces a different relationship with the sea through its ancient peninsula and harbour setting.
History and local character
Side’s surviving streets, public buildings and temples make the ancient city an important part of Manavgat’s cultural identity. Farther inland, Selge occupies a mountain setting near today’s Altınkaya. The contrast between a coastal ancient city and a highland one is especially informative: both belong to the district, but their environments and histories should not be treated as identical.
Landscape and local life
The district’s everyday life continues in the modern town and its surrounding communities. Visitor discussions often compare Side and Manavgat through markets, yet the wider area has much more to explain: river landscapes, ancient urban form, mountain settlement and protected natural settings. A clear introduction keeps these places distinct rather than listing every excursion under “Side”.
