Getting to know Serik

Serik is a district east of Antalya city, extending from the Mediterranean coast towards the Taurus hinterland. Belek is a coastal destination within Serik, not a separate district of Antalya. The district centre, the coast and the ancient settlements inland describe different parts of its geography.

The productive plain and its rivers help explain Serik’s long settlement history. Today, agriculture and tourism are both part of the district’s identity. Belek’s coastal landscape is widely associated with resorts and golf, while the modern district town provides a different, everyday setting away from that frontage.

History and local character

Aspendos and Sillyon connect Serik with ancient Pamphylia. Aspendos is especially known for its well-preserved Roman theatre and aqueduct remains near the Köprüçay. Sillyon occupies a hilltop setting, offering a different relationship between ancient settlement and terrain. Seeing them as separate places is more useful than grouping them together as one archaeological park.

Landscape and local life

Visitors asking what Belek is like outside its resorts are also asking about the surrounding district. A useful answer includes the town, productive landscape and heritage inland. The coast is one part of Serik, while places such as Zeytintaşı Cave add another natural setting. Neither the whole district nor its local life can be reduced to the facilities of individual hotels.

Places and landscapes to explore

Aspendos theatre and aqueducts

Aspendos theatre and aqueducts

The theatre is the most recognisable monument, but the ancient city also depended on water and its wider setting near the Köprüçay. The aqueduct remains help explain that practical side of urban life. The site belongs to Serik and is separate from Perge in neighbouring Aksu.

Sillyon

Sillyon

The hilltop remains at Sillyon introduce a different form of ancient settlement from Aspendos. Topography is central to understanding the site. The municipality identifies it among the district’s heritage places; a general introduction does not certify a particular access route or the condition of paths on the day of a visit.

Belek and the Mediterranean frontage

Belek and the Mediterranean frontage

Belek represents Serik’s coastal tourism landscape, with a different character from the inland district centre. It is useful to distinguish the coastal areas, the town’s commercial streets and the surrounding plain. Those differences give a more rounded introduction than treating Belek as one self-contained resort property.

Zeytintaşı Cave

The cave is one of Serik’s named natural landmarks in official visitor inventories. It provides a contrast to the monumental architecture at Aspendos and Sillyon. As with other managed caves, descriptions of its natural interest should be separated from current opening, capacity or access arrangements.

Questions about the area

What is Belek like outside the resorts?

Belek is part of Serik’s wider coastal and agricultural landscape. Beyond individual resort grounds, the district includes commercial streets, the modern town of Serik and important heritage inland, notably Aspendos and Sillyon. The coastal destination and the inland district centre are distinct places.

What is Serik known for?

Serik is associated with the ancient Pamphylian sites of Aspendos and Sillyon, the productive inland plain and Belek’s coastal tourism and golf setting. Aspendos is especially recognised for its Roman theatre. Belek is within Serik district, while the modern district centre has a different everyday character from the resorts.
